Nihonashi #3 - Ichiban Suki na Hon (My Favorite Book)

Start blurb:
Wow, it's been more than two months since I did a Nihonashi. *bad Mai-chan* I actually wrote the script about a month and a half ago, and recorded the audio about 3 weeks ago, but couldn't find the time to edit and prepare the Keynote (work, school, procrastination, forgetfulness). Sorry about that (mostly to myself...). So here it is finally!
(Click the title above to go to the video.)

English: Nihonashi #3 - My favorite book

The other voice: Hi, welcome to Nihonashi.
Me: ‘My favorite book’ is a lie. Choosing one is too hard.
The other voice: Then, what will we do?
Me: Let’s talk about one book out of the books we like.
The other voice: I see. Dreamhunter, right?
Me: Yeah, I’m reading that right now.
The other voice: It’s an interesting book.
Me: Really original! They catch dreams, right, and later sell the dreams.
The other voice: Catch? Where?
Me: The Place. It’s like another world.
The other voice: But the story is in reality, isn’t it?
Me: Yup! Change just one thing, change everything.
The other voice: It was a really good book.
Me: Actually, right after I started the sequel.
The other voice: That’s amazing! It’s a good book... I want to read more of those....
Me: Hey, manga takes up around 80% of Japan’s book economy, did you know?
The other voice: You pulled that outta nowhere....
Me: Really, my favorite book is....
The other voice: Don’t think too hard, you’ll hurt yourself. Hey, what about Harry Potter?
Me: Me likey!... those books. Pretty soon I’m going to reread them.
The other voice: All of them?
Me: You bet! I’m looking forward to it!
The other voice: ‘Cause you just saw the 6th movie, right?
Me: That’s right! It was fun! It was good!
The other voice: Is the 6th your favorite?
Me: Ee... dunno. I like ‘em all.
The other voice: Yes, yes. Well then, everyone, you must practice your Japanese.
Me: With us!
The other voice: Exactly.
Watashi: See ya later!

Tech Stuff:
Used Garageband this time to record the audio, which is great because it's easy to edit and add audio effects (like a noise gate).
Keynote instead of Final Cut -- so much easier. I mean, I'm not making a real movie, so using Final Cut was making it too complicated. Keynote is awesome.

End blurb:
The books I talked about were Dreamhunter (read it read it!), I finished the sequel too and it's also really good, and Harry Potter (on re-read I'm on the 5th book). The HP theme I hummed myself, in 2 10 sec. clips, so I hardly see that as encroaching on copyrights. It just can't be if there is any sanity left in this world (...).

So thanks, honest and heartfelt to anyone reading this. (Have I told you my doubts on the subject?)
Until next time,
~Mai

Blerb ad

I have another episode of Nihonashi written, but I was on vacation for a bit so haven't gotten around to creating it.
But I felt the blog might be lonely and neglected, so here's this post.

I'd also like to try advertising.
Product: Voice recordings by me
Saleability: Well I don't know, that's what I need you to tell me.
I'd like some constructive feedback on my voice recordings, and tips on how to improve my voice and acting. Just let me know what you think, it'd be a lot of help!
And if you need voice recordings done for anything, and you think I might be able to do it, let me know and I'll see what I can do!

Later,
~iggy

Nihonashi #2 - Fullmetal Alchemist

Nihonashi number 2!

Let’s talk about anime in Japanese!

(picture found on animevisions...
when it still existed....)

Me: Today’s subject is Fullmetal Alchemist!
Other voice: This anime is really popular.
Me: I love it too. It’s fun, exciting, Ed and Al are likable characters -- it’s a great anime, isn’t it.
Other voice: I also really like the soundtrack.
Me: Yes! Like Melissa and In-erasable Sin and Bratja -- do you know these? When you see the anime, you come to like the soundtrack. Let me sing for you!
Other voice: (Um, that’s-)
Me: (uhhum)

Yeah, I’ll skip that, because it’s still in Japanese, but you’ll find the translation on my blog. (below)

Melissa
Cleave apart the memories of those faraway days with your hands
End the breath of sadness
Come on, pierce through my chest made anxious by love

Looking at the sky in which the tomorrow will come, I don't know what to do with my heart that is only lost
Birds by my side flew away- I wonder if they found light somewhere

Come now, won't you let me ride on your back, too?
Then keep far away from the kindess that I deserted at the highest place

repeat 1st verse

Yup... that was the TV cut.
Other voice: (You really are no good.)
Me: (Sorry for not being good at singing.) That song is the first I memorized.
Other voice: (uhhum) In Fullmetal Alchemist, Ed and Al are siblings learning Alchemy.
Me: Alchemy is so cool!
Other voice: It’s like magic, but for alchemists, in order to make something, you have to exchange it for something with the same worth.
Me: It’s got fantasy, thriller, comedy, and lots of exciting stuff. If you haven’t seen it, you should!
Other voice: I agree.
Me: Yup. Oh, it’s the end already.
Other voice: Huh? I object!
Me: (But you know, I can’t think of anything to say.)
Other voice: This program is about 50 episodes right? There are plenty of subjects. For example—

Always you are in danger, I can breath
You are precious to me, so that should be enough

I keep making small mistakes
How long can I go obtaining strength without hurting anything?

In spite of wandering, I will live believing in this love
I will hold these blocked wounds tightly
We will continue walking, because we will return after
Even though right now, deep in this heart, my in-erasable sins hurt

Nihonashi #1 - Hajimeta Koto

As promised, I have created a video on YouTube with my 'nihonashi' (nihongo hanashi); click on the title link to get there. (It's working!)

Here is what is being said:

Nihonashi

#1 - Hajimeta koto

Nihonashi ni youkoso! Mai desu!

Nan desu ka to itte imasu. Oshiete moraimasu.
Watashi wa Maira desu. Mai-chan to yonde ne. Amerika-jin no gakusei de, anime ga suki nanode, nihongo o benkyou shimasu. Lesson ga mou inakute, motto renshuu shitai kedo, darenimo watashi to renshuu shimasen. Dakara, watashi to kono hanashi o shimashita.

Hokano koe: Domo.

Owari! Jaa, hajimeta koto o shitteru to, kore o tsukutta riyuu ga wakarimasu ne? Kore kara, iroiro na koto o shaberu tsumori desu. Nihongo wa mada naratteiru kara, yappari machigai shimasu. Nihon o benkyou shite mo, mou shitteiru mo, osewa ni narimasu!

Honto no koto - what I think I’m saying (or close enough):
‘Nihonashi’ (nihongo hanashi) welcome! Mai here. “What is this?” you’re saying. Let me tell you.
I’m Myra. Call me Mai-chan. I’m an American student, and because I like anime, I’m studying Japanese. There are no more lessons, and I want to practice, but no one will practice with me. So I had this conversation with myself.

The conversation that began it:
Me: Hey, what should I write in my blog?
The other voice: Well... you have lots of interests, right?
Me: Yeah.
The other voice: So write about something you’re interested in.
Me: But there’s no one who wants to read about my interests. No one at all.
The other voice: Then choose an interest people want to read about!
Me: Is that right? Oh... what about piano?
The other voice: Like what?
Me: Ee... good piano music books?
The other voice: No one wants to read about that.
Me: Eh? Why?
The other voice: What do you intend to write?
Me: Hmm. Well... what about Japanese?
The other voice: Yes, that’s good. But what’s your goal?
Me: Goal? Should be to practice.
The other voice: Exactly, but do you care if it’s writing practice or speaking practice?
Me: I want to practice talking...
The other voice: In that case, wouldn’t it be best if you did something like audio or video?
Me: That’s true! But the blog would still be empty.
The other voice: Perhaps no one can understand your speaking. What will you do?
Me: Hey, are you saying my speaking ability is bad?
The other voice: Maybe. Transcribe, and write that in your blog.
Me: I see! I’ll do that! You’re a genius!
The other voice: Thanks.

The end! So, now that you know what began it, you understand the reason I made this, right? From now on, I intend to talk about various things. Because I’m still learning Japanese, I’m sure to make mistakes. Whether you’re studying Japanese, or know it already, I thank you for your help!

For those hoping to learn some Japanese here, I’ll list the vocabulary words:
hajimeru = to begin
koto = intangible thing
youkoso = welcome
oshieru = to teach
yobu = to call
gakusei = student
suki = to like
nihongo = Japanese
benkyou = study
motto = more
renshuu = practice
darenimo = no one
watashi = I, me
hanashi = conversation
kaku = to write
takusan = lots
kyoumi = interests
yomu = to read
hito = person, people
zettai = never, always
erabu = to choose
ii = good
fu = sheet music
hon = book
sore = that
doushite = why
tsumori = intention
mokuteki = goal, purpose
hazu = should be
atari = correct, bingo
tsukuru = to make
honto = really, real
mada = still
aki = empty
moshi = if
anata = you
wakaru = to understand
ginou = ability
warui = bad
kaki utsusu = transcribe
tensai = genius
domo = thanks
owari = end
shiru = to know
kore = this
riyuu = reason
kara = from
iroiro = various
shaberu = to talk, chat
narau = to learn
yappari = like I thought
machigai = wrong, mistaken

Discussion
The main things I was unsure about were my uses of aki, ginou, kaki utsusu, fu, and yondagatte (which I think is the way you say someone else wants something -- in this case to read -- but it confuses me). Also, am I using 'hanasu' correctly? Especially when I ask 'kaku renshuu to hanasu renshuu' (writing practice or speaking practice), I had no idea how to say that.
Um... and overall grammar.
And all over, even if what I say makes sense, is there a better way to say it?

Please ask your own questions too, I will try to answer as best I can (or others can help out).

(Right now I'm speaking to an empty room... but it's recorded, so I'll just leave it here and hope people will trickle in.)

Thanks!
This has been Mai, signing off.

I've Changed My Mind - to Japanese

I thought about this blog a lot, and decided I really don't want to write about my writing. I should spend time writing if I'm going to do that. So instead, I want to use this blog to practice my Japanese. I'm going to start a thing I'm calling Nihonashi (nihongo hanashi), where I record audio/video of myself speaking Japanese. That will be on YouTube. I'll put the text in Japanese and my English translation in this blog. I hope to get people to correct my Japanese and my pronounciation, and maybe they'll learn something on the way.

Because I'm the one writing, I'll actually be commited to coming and writing issues :p
I'm excited to see what I can learn! If nothing else, I'll get a lot of practice :)

I've written #1, so I just have to record, edit, and post, then my epic trying-to-become-fluent-in-Japanese-journey shall begin.

Jaa ne!
~Iggy -> Mai-chan

p.s. I graduated! Now I work. Whoot.

La.

My favorite post title. I'm creative.

I shouldn't be here, but this place is neglected, so I came to say hi. My thesis draft is due and I need to get to that, hehe. The topic is copyrights.

Today I learned about the crusades in my history class. It was quite fun. Though I had my limited knowledge of Richard the Lionhearted crushed, he really wasn't terribly bright, which is a pity. I like Robin Hood stories, always thought it was a pity there were so many movies but none were particular good -- 'cept the Disney one. Disney used to make such fun movies. The other day I learned there really was going to be a Little Mermaid 3, I nearly died from horror.

Ok, I'm too tired to be here. I don't want this to turn into my journal, I have one of those.

What do you think about copyrights? I'm arguing that they be abolished. I know, I don't really believe myself, but it's been a lot of fun to research. Copyrights, I mean, no one really argues for getting rid of them. Except at QuestionCopyright.org, which I found in one of my many Google searches. I'm reading 'Remix' by Lawrence Lessig (law professor, Creative Commons), it's quite interesting. Especially because he mentions AMVs. Ha.

So what would no copyrights mean for my writing future? According to my thesis I needn't worry excessively, I can find a sponsor or hope no one distributes my work freely. While it's my dream to make money off books, in reality -- no, I won't say it! Never!
I'd rather have my stuff read, though. That's enough. Being paid to do what I love is just a bonus.

Good night.

Prologue: Introduction!

I've never had a blog before. Just want to get that out there so, perhaps, I can maintain some bit of dignity as I fumble around here.

First of all, as this is the start of what may or may not turn out to be a viable hobby for me, I should introduce myself and what I hope to do here.

What is Ignolopi?
It's my sign-in name for just about every website I frequent. Don't go to a dictionary, the word doesn't exist. I once had someone ask me if it was a combination, something like 'ignorant loper', which I kind of liked. I made up the name when I was maybe 12, and it's been my very close friend ever since.
The name is actually a 'land' (country) in a fantasy world I created around the same time and have been reforming over the years.

Which moves us to me. (you can see my potential with the written word right here)

Who am I?
Right now I'm a full-time college student, but that will change with upcoming graduation (YES!!!). Although I've never published anything, I consider myself a fantasy author. Since I was 8 or 9 I've been obsessed with writing down stories, and have since decided I will be a published novelist. You only have to take a glimpse at my writing to know I have a long way to go, but it's what I love to do!

So I'm not just some other faceless name on the computer, I want you to know what else I'm interested in, so although I will still be faceless, you may see an interest of mine you kind of share and we'll have an instantaneous bonding experience (on your side anyway).
Or is it just because I'm bored right now?

Interests:
Japanese, anime, manga, novels, movies, travel, music, and food.
Wow that's impersonal. More specifically, here's a small selection:

Japanese: Hai, konnichiwa, iggy desu! Nihongo de jouzu dewa nai kedo, itsuka perapera ni naritai dayo!
Anime: Ouran High School Host Club, the Cat Returns, Howl's Moving Castle, Hikaru no Go, Fruits Basket, Fullmetal Alchemist, Yu Yu Hakusho, Wallflower, Maison Ikkoku, Kekkaishi, Kodocha, Hunter X Hunter, Princess Tutu
Manga: Fruits Basket, Demon Diary, Petshop of Horrors, Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto, Genju no Seiza, Hunter x Hunter, Black Cat, Rurouni Kenshin, Death Note, Gaba Kawa, Matantei Loki, Vampire Game

Novels: the Thief, Queen of Attolia, King of Attolia, Howl's Moving Castle, Ten Little Indians, Harry Potter, A Business of Ferrets, Count of Monte Christo, Mistborn
Movies: Princess Bride, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Stardust, Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, Pirates of the Caribbean, House, Pushing Daisies

Music: Adiemus, Altan, The Chieftains, the Corrs, Cusco, Clannad, David Arkenstone, Enya, Gary Stadler, June Tabor, Loreena McKennitt, Maire Brennan, Mary Black, Pentangle, Rita Connolly, Sarah Brightman, Solas, Steeleye Span, Steve McDonald, ABBA, the Beatles, Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, Good Charlotte, Herman's Hermits, L'Arc~en~Ciel, Nightwish, Ogata Megumi, Seki Tomokazu, Sinead Lohan, Steve Conte, Weiss Kreuz, Within Temptation, Yoko Kanno

I play the piano and love to sing. I've been to Canada, France, Spain, England, Panama, and a couple other places. I don't actually like the hassle of travel, but I love going new places, and am somewhat fascinated with other cultures. I like creating AMVs (anime music videos) and am learning video editing techniques. I have a tiny Siamese kitty, she follows me around everywhere, cats are awesome!
I love chocolate. And coffee. And tea. ...and stir fry :)

Oh. You can probably tell. I'm a girl.

That's all I can think of to say about myself. With no knowledge of a target audience, how can I market myself successfully aside from just throwing things out there?
Just kidding.
Someday I hope people can read my books and enjoy them... even if only in blog form.

I'm sure I can think of more things to say at a later date. I'll keep you posted!
(Get it? Posted? Yeah, I have a brilliant sense of humor too :p ).

~Ignolopi*

*Iggy is a shortening someone else gave to me, I like it.
